The Tauranga basin is deep, soft ash sitting over Te Ranga ignimbrite. It drains well but packs down hard under foot traffic and mower wheels — which is why so many local lawns go thin in the wheel lines. We change mowing direction every visit so the load is never in the same place twice.
Sitting on the harbour keeps the air damp, especially through autumn. Wet clippings left in clumps are how brown patch and dollar spot take hold, so we mulch fine or lift them rather than leaving rows across the surface.
Most established Tauranga lawns are kikuyu or couch. Both are aggressive summer growers that build thatch quickly, and both want a higher cut than a fescue lawn or they scalp and brown off in a February dry spell.

More often than most of the country. Tauranga is mild and humid enough that grass barely stops. From Labour Weekend through to about April, fortnightly is the minimum on a kikuyu lawn and weekly gives the sharpest finish. Over winter a three to four weekly cycle usually holds it, because the coast rarely frosts hard enough to stop growth completely.
