Three thousand people spread across twenty-five square kilometres of orchard, block and ridge. There is no suburb here — and a property with a house lawn, a paddock and half a kilometre of driveway is a different job to a section in town.
Almost nothing here is a standard section, so almost nothing is a standard price. What we can do is explain how it is built.

Per visit, green waste included. Prices exclude GST, with GST added at the standard rate on the invoice. On an acreage property the quote comes down to three questions: how much is mown to lawn standard, how much is just topped, and how much verge and fence line is involved. Answer those and the number is straightforward — which is why we walk the block rather than pricing off an address. Te Puna, Ōmokoroa and Bethlehem run as one route, so travel is not loaded onto a single job.

What Te Puna blocks need
There is no suburb here — it is countryside with houses in it. That changes what “the lawn” even means.
On a block, “the lawn” is usually three different things. There is the house lawn, mown properly to a set height. There is paddock or orchard surround, which gets topped a few times a year to keep it down rather than manicured. And there are margins — driveway verges, fence lines, around sheds. Three standards, three frequencies, one property. Agreeing where those lines sit is the whole quote.
Mowing and topping are not the same service. Mowing keeps an area looking like lawn. Topping knocks a paddock down so it does not go to seed and become a fire and pest problem. Different gear, different frequency, very different cost. Trying to mow an entire block to lawn standard is expensive and usually pointless; topping the area around the house looks rough. Drawing the line clearly is what keeps the price sensible.
The driveway is a real cost line nobody expects. A hundred metres or more of drive with verges either side, often with a fence line alongside. It is invisible until someone prices it, and it is why a Te Puna quote is not comparable to a town section. We itemise it rather than burying it, so you can decide if you would rather we left the back fence line alone.
The flat and the Minden behave differently. The lowland strip between harbour and highway is sheltered, fertile and grows hard, and it holds wet through winter. Up on the ridge you are exposed, the ground drains, and it stays workable most of the year. Same postcode, two different schedules — and a lot of blocks here have a waterway boundary, so nothing gets pushed into a stream margin.

Fertile lowland that grows hard, and a ridge that behaves quite differently — on a block, timing matters more than frequency.

Shelter belt and block work
The window that matters most out here. Growth has eased, the ground is firm enough to get machinery across a paddock without marking it, and cuts heal before winter. Belt reductions, stump work and any heavy clearing all belong in this stretch. Try it in October and you are fighting soft ground and full growth at once.
Jul – Aug
Wet on the flat, fine on the ridge
The lowland strip holds water and a heavy machine will mark it, while up on the Minden the ground drains and stays workable. Same property portfolio, two different winter realities. We schedule accordingly rather than treating the whole area as one.
Sep – Nov
Paddocks get away fast
On fertile ground a paddock area that looked fine in August is knee-high by mid-October. Topping it once in early spring is a fraction of the cost of dealing with it in December, and it keeps seed heads down. This is the single most useful thing to book on a Te Puna block.
Dec – Feb
Weekly on the house lawn
The mown area needs weekly through the peak on ground this fertile. Paddock areas do not — they just need topping when they get away. Splitting those two schedules rather than treating the block as one job is what keeps the cost sensible through summer.
Three acres, a long drive and a paddock we could never keep on top of. They split it into what gets mown and what gets topped, priced both, and it came in well under what we had been quoted to mow the lot. Sensible people.

FAQs
Te Puna questions
What people on blocks out here ask us most.
We have three acres. Do you have to mow all of it?
No, and you almost certainly should not pay to. On nearly every Te Puna block the sensible split is a house lawn mown properly to a set height, and paddock or surround areas simply topped a few times a year to keep them down. Different equipment, different frequency, dramatically different cost. We walk the property, agree where that line sits, and price each part separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
What is the difference between mowing and topping?
Mowing is regular cutting to a set height so an area looks like lawn. Topping is knocking longer grass down a few times a year so it does not go to seed — which keeps pests and fire risk down and stops a paddock turning into a job. Topping is far cheaper per square metre and completely appropriate for anything you are not walking on daily. Most blocks here need both, in different places.
Why does a Te Puna quote cost more than a town section?
Usually the driveway and the margins rather than the lawn itself. A hundred metres or more of drive with verges either side and a fence line alongside takes real time, and it is invisible until someone prices it. We itemise those rather than burying them, so you can see what is what — and decide if you would rather we left the back fence line alone.
Is Te Puna part of Tauranga?
No. Te Puna is in the Western Bay of Plenty District, Kaimai Ward, and it is zoned rural as a deliberate green belt — which is why it is orchards and blocks rather than subdivisions, despite being ten minutes from the city. Different council, different vegetation rules, different green waste arrangements. Our quotes already allow for all of it.
Does it matter whether we are on the Minden or down on the flat?
It does. The lowland strip between the harbour and the highway is sheltered and fertile, grows hard and holds wet through winter. Up on the Minden ridge you are exposed, the wind finds the seaward faces, and the ground drains and stays workable most of the year. We schedule the two differently rather than treating Te Puna as one place, because they genuinely behave differently.
Our boundary backs onto an orchard. Anything we should know?
A shared shelter belt is protecting somebody’s crop, so cutting it hard on your side changes how it performs on theirs — and on conifer species there is no coming back from a hard cut. We identify the species before quoting, work around spray and harvest timing where it matters, and on a genuinely shared line we would rather have a word with the grower than create a problem between neighbours.
We have a stream boundary. Do you take everything away?
Always. The Wairoa River, the Te Puna Stream and the harbour edge all run through this area and a lot of blocks have a waterway boundary. Clippings and prunings pushed into a stream margin do real damage, and it is not something we will do even though it would be easier than loading. Everything leaves on the trailer, and disposal is already in the quote.
How is GST handled, and is green waste included?
Both, including the Western Bay disposal charges. Prices are quoted exclusive of GST, with GST added at the standard rate on the invoice and fixed before we start, so nothing gets added at invoice time.
