Deadheading, cutting back leggy growth and shaping shrubs to keep them dense rather than woody. We never take more than about a third off a plant in one session — more than that stresses it and you lose the following season’s growth.
Keeping hedges square and off the paths between full trims. Anything needing a proper reduction or a big reshape moves onto our hedge trimming service, and we’ll flag it rather than hack at it during a maintenance visit.

The soil is still warm, the air has cooled, and there is enough of the year left for plants to settle before winter. Autumn is the main window for shaping, cutting back and planting.
Visits ease back but they don’t stop. Winter is when the bones of a garden get sorted — the dormant pruning, the drainage problems, the soil work — while there is no growth in the way.

Growth barely stops here, so a garden left for six or eight weeks in November is a much bigger job than two visits would have been. If the budget only stretches to a few visits a year, autumn is the one to prioritise.

With a one-off reset, priced separately from ongoing maintenance. That first visit takes considerably longer and produces a lot of green waste, and we’ll tell you the number before we start. After that a regular schedule keeps it there for a fraction of the cost — the reset is the expensive part, not the upkeep.
Yes, included as standard. Everything we cut leaves on the trailer. On a very large clean-up where the volume is exceptional we’ll mention any additional disposal cost in the quote up front, never afterwards.
Light tidying, yes — keeping it square and off the paths between proper trims. A full reduction or reshape is a different job with different gear and a lot more waste, so that goes on our tree and hedge trimming service and gets quoted separately. We’d rather do it properly than half-do it during a maintenance slot.
Autumn for most shaping and cutting back, once growth has slowed but before winter properly sets in. Winter suits dormant pruning on deciduous trees and roses. Spring should be light touch-ups only, because sap is rising and a hard cut then stresses the plant. And regardless of season, we avoid pruning in wet weather since that’s how disease travels between plants.
Not at all, as long as we can get to the garden. Just let us know about locked gates or dogs. For the first visit it does help if you can be there for ten minutes to walk us round and point out what matters to you — what’s a weed and what’s a plant you’re growing on purpose isn’t always obvious.
