Two coastlines, tight sections and gardens that have been here since the 1920s. Mowing at the Mount is a different job on the harbour side than it is two blocks away facing the ocean — and we price it that way.

Sections here are generally smaller than Pāpāmoa, which helps. Access and boundary length are what actually move the number.
Per visit, green waste included. Prices exclude GST, with GST added at the standard rate on the invoice. Access is the big variable at the Mount — a section reached through a narrow side gate takes noticeably longer than one that opens onto the drive, even at the same lawn area. Corner sections cost more than mid-block for the same reason: edging is what takes the time.
Two things decide almost every job here: which way your section faces, and whether we can get gear to it.
Harbour side and ocean side behave like different suburbs. At the base of Mauao they are only a couple of blocks apart, but the Pilot Bay side sits sheltered in the lee of the mountain while the ocean side takes the full onshore southerly. Sheltered gardens hold softer planting and keep moisture noticeably better. Ocean-facing sections get salt burn on the seaward face of every hedge, and grass that dries out first on the exposed corner.
Access is the real cost here, not lawn size. The original beach blocks are compact with narrow side runs, and in summer there is nowhere to park a trailer. A section reached through a standard side gate takes noticeably longer than one that opens onto the drive, even at the same lawn area. That is why two similar-looking Mount properties can price quite differently.
The gardens are old, and that changes the work. This has been a settlement since the early 1900s, so mature griselinia hedges twenty years into their life and established pōhutukawa are the norm. A good share of what we do here is not mowing at all — it is bringing overgrown boundaries back off the footpath and lifting branches off a roofline. Species matters: some hedges come back from a hard cut, conifers never do.
A lot of owners are not in town. Holiday homes and short-stay rentals make up a real share of the Mount, which means access arrangements, photos after each visit, and lawns that need to look right for an arrival rather than on a fixed calendar. We are set up for owners in Auckland or Hamilton most of the year.

Growth follows the coast, but the calendar here is also shaped by the summer influx. Both matter to how a section gets scheduled.
The Mount fills up over the holidays and stays full. Anything needing a trailer, a machine or a park on the street is far easier before mid-December than after it. Holiday-home owners who book their pre-Christmas tidy in November get a slot; those who ring on the 20th usually do not.
Warm, humid and windy at once. Ocean-facing hedges take their heaviest salt load now and lawns cut too short go brown fast on sand. We lift the mowing height through summer rather than scalping, and keep hedge work on the windward side light.
The most useful months at the Mount. Growth has eased, the streets are quiet again, and this is when established hedges get properly reduced and reshaped. One autumn visit on an overgrown boundary is worth three summer tidies.
Dormant pruning finishes, beds get mulched, and lawns get their first feed before growth picks up in September. The quietest month of our year, so it is the easiest time to get bigger jobs booked and done properly.
We rent our Mount place out over summer and live in Hamilton. They keep it looking sharp, send photos after every visit, and I have never once had to chase them about anything.
What people on the peninsula ask us most.
Yes. From Pilot Bay and the streets at the base of Mauao, through central Mount and Omanu, out to Arataki and Bayfair, and across to Matapihi on the harbour side. The Mount covers about 1,621 hectares with roughly 21,800 residents, and it is compact enough that we run it densely rather than making special trips.
Almost certainly which way you face. The Mount is a peninsula, and at the base of Mauao the sheltered harbour side and the exposed ocean side are only a couple of blocks apart. Harbour-side gardens sit in the lee of the mountain and can carry softer planting. Ocean-facing sections take the full onshore wind and the salt with it. Same suburb, genuinely different growing conditions.
Usually, and it is one of the most common jobs we do here given how established Mount gardens are. It depends entirely on the species. Griselinia, pittosporum, photinia and camellia all re-shoot from bare wood, so an overgrown one can be reduced hard and be back to a dense screen within a season or two. Conifers like leylandii and macrocarpa will not — cut past the green shell and it stays brown permanently. We identify it before quoting, not after cutting.
Not a problem, but it does affect the price and we would rather say so up front. A lot of older Mount sections have no vehicle access past the house, so waste gets barrowed down a side path to the street. On a mow that is minor. On a hedge reduction producing several cubic metres of green waste it is a significant part of the labour, so it goes in the quote rather than turning up as a surprise.
It is a good part of what we do at the Mount. You do not need to be here. We need access arranged and to know about gates and dogs, then we send photos after each visit so you can see the state of the property from wherever you are. For short-stay listings tell us your changeover days and we will work around them rather than turning up mid-booking.
Autumn through to early winter, roughly April to June. Growth has slowed, the summer crowds have gone so there is room to work and park, and cuts made then heal before winter properly sets in. Late winter and very early spring also work for a major reduction, just before new growth starts. We avoid heavy cutting in the middle of summer and in wet weather, since that is when disease spreads between plants.
Fortnightly is the minimum from about Labour Weekend to April, with weekly through the peak from December to March. Kikuyu on warm coastal sand grows quickly and letting it get away means taking too much off in one cut. Over winter three to four weekly holds it — there is no frost on this coast, so it never fully stops. We shift the schedule with the season automatically.
