On a large lawn the cost is hours, not square metres. A wider deck clears the same area in a quarter of the laps, so the price per square metre drops — and keeps dropping the bigger the section gets. This is the point where a ride-on stops being a preference and starts being cheaper.
Two jobs at two very different prices. Mowing holds an area at lawn standard. Topping simply knocks a paddock down before it seeds and turns into a fire and pest problem. What actually stops ride-on mowing at a Mount section
Not the slope. Not the size. Not the street. The gap between your gate posts.
A standard ride-on needs roughly a metre of clear width to get through. Plenty of side gates sit around 900mm — near enough to look fine from the house, not near enough for the machine.
It is the single most common reason a ride-on booking falls over on arrival, and it is entirely avoidable with a tape measure. Two minutes now saves a wasted morning for both of us.
If it’s tight, there are options. A gate panel that lifts out is a cheap fix and pays for itself in the first season. Where nothing will get the machine in, the job is quoted as walk-behind work and charged that way, instead of being discovered on the morning.
So take a measurement before you book anyone at all: inside face of one post to the inside face of the other, ignoring the gate itself. Send that figure with your enquiry. Cheapest two minutes in the whole transaction.

Clippings normally go straight back in. A ride-on visit mulches them, and on ground that holds as little as this sand does, that is effectively the only free feeding your lawn gets all year. Where the grass has run long enough that mulching would leave rows lying on the surface to yellow off, the crew catches and carts them off instead, and the figure you were quoted does not move.

The Mount is a tombolo: Mauao is joined to the mainland by a bar of sand the sea itself built, and the strip that resulted was cut into narrow deep sections to fit as many houses as possible between two beaches. The result is houses close to their boundaries, side runs you can barely wheel a bin down, and lawns measured in tens of square metres. Excellent walk-behind country. Genuinely poor ride-on country.

Head out past the estuary, though, and it is a different conversation entirely. Pāpāmoa East, Te Puna and the Te Puke end are another world for this machine. Flat, open, wide gates, room to turn a deck — close to the best ride-on ground in the Bay. Same crew and the same machine, run on the same route as the Mount work.

There is no frost on this coast, so nothing ever truly stops. A big section keeps putting on growth through June and July, slowly. Walk away from it in June and what is waiting in September is not a mow, it is a staged cut-back over more than one visit — which costs more than every fortnight you skipped put together.
Nobody on this crew gets to quote a ride-on for a section that does not need one. If the lawn is under a quarter acre, or the gate opening is under a metre, the quote that comes back is a walk-behind quote at walk-behind money, and it says why. We lose the difference on every one of those, and we would rather lose it there than have a machine sitting on a trailer outside a house it was never going to get into.

05Does ride-on mowing leave wheel tracks on a Mount Maunganui lawn?
Not when the direction is turned every visit, which is the whole reason we do it. Marks become ruts only where a machine runs the same line week after week. The sand here helps as well: it drains so freely that a section firms up within hours of rain and takes far less marking than the heavier flats inland. A saturated clay lawn is where ride-on tracks become a real problem, and that is not what you have.
06Can ride-on mowing cope with the mature planting on Mount Maunganui sections?
The machine cannot, and the crew does. Anything the deck will not reach gets hand-trimmed on the same visit, inside the price rather than on top of it. They go back into the lawn by default. Mulched fine and dropped, they are close to the only feeding this sand gives a lawn for nothing, which matters more here than it would on better ground.
