Those are starting points for a standard section, green waste disposal already in the number. A compact townhouse lot sits at the bottom of the range; a larger waterfront section with long boundaries sits above it.
On hedges: one cut back to the same line every year costs a fraction of bringing one down after it has been left to run. If yours has already gone past the line, we quote the reduction and the ongoing trim separately so you see both numbers.
Your own figure is fixed once we have walked the section, and it does not move afterwards.

Holding the hedge at your view line. A hedge planted for privacy takes the harbour view within a decade, because “a bit off the top” each year still creeps up ten or fifteen centimetres. We mark the height you want once, then cut back to that mark every year so the water stays in the lounge window. That is tree and hedge trimming, booked once a year against the line we agreed.
Mowing and trimming around the exposure. On a peninsula tip a section catches wind from two or three sides at once, which is why one face of a shrub burns while the rest looks fine. We cut windward faces lightly so the outer foliage keeps sheltering the growth behind it, and we check which faces are taking the weather before touching anything. Mowing and edging on the standard sections, ride-on where the waterfront lots allow the machine in.
Beds that dry out, and ground that does not. Wind pulls moisture straight out of an exposed bed, while the wet margin at the bottom of the section never quite dries. Mulch fixes the first; on the second we bring lighter gear rather than mark the lawn, and that corner is usually better as bed than turf. Mulch, bark and weed mat for the beds, garden maintenance to keep them that way.
Everything cut leaves on the trailer. Nothing goes over the back fence here — not clippings, not prunings, not a single barrow load. Every visit ends with the waste on the truck, and bulk cut-backs are handled as shrubs and rubbish removal.

The most important visit on a Matua property. Growth has eased, so a hedge cut to its height line now holds that line right through until spring rather than creeping back in six weeks. If you only do one hedge trim a year, this is when it should happen — and it is the difference between a view that stays open and one that closes in.
Sections toward the saltmarsh hold water through winter and a heavy machine will mark ground that carries it fine in February. We switch to lighter gear or move the visit rather than leaving ruts. Up on the higher streets it drains far better and this barely registers.
Spring is when harbour wind does its damage. New soft growth is the most vulnerable thing in the garden and it gets burnt on whichever face is taking the weather. Mulching beds now helps more than people expect — it is moisture loss from wind, not lack of watering, that causes most of it.
Sheltered from the open ocean and close to water on three sides, Matua rarely browns off the way exposed coastal sections do. Growth keeps ticking along, so weekly through the peak is genuinely worth it here — and it is when the sunsets are worth having the hedge low for.
What people at this end of the peninsula ask us most.
Usually, and it depends on species. Griselinia, pittosporum, photinia and camellia all re-shoot from bare wood, so a hedge that has run well past its line can be reduced and be dense again within a season or two. Conifers — leylandii, macrocarpa, cryptomeria — will not, and cutting past the green shell leaves permanent brown. We identify what you have before quoting. Once it is back down, holding the same line every autumn stops it happening again.
Almost certainly exposure. Matua sits at the tip of the peninsula with water on three sides, so a section can be catching harbour wind from two or three directions at once. It shows as burnt or browning growth on whichever faces are taking the weather, while sheltered parts of the same garden look perfect. The fixes are species choice on those faces, mulching to hold moisture, and trimming windward sides lightly so foliage protects what sits behind.
If you are on the low ground near the saltmarsh, partly. That margin is genuinely wet with brackish groundwater, and no amount of aeration turns it into free-draining soil. What helps is not making it worse — keeping heavy machinery off it when it is saturated, dethatching so water can get in rather than sitting on a spongy layer, and accepting that the wettest corner may be better as planting or mulch than lawn.
Please don’t, and we won’t. The Matua Saltmarsh is a working estuary, and green waste smothers low vegetation while the nutrients feed exactly the wrong things in that environment. Everything we cut leaves on our trailer and goes to Te Maunga to be composted, with disposal already included in the quote.
Yes. The peninsula takes in Ōtūmoetai, Matua and Bellevue, with Brookfield adjoining, and we run the whole of it as one route. Matua itself is only 244 hectares with around 5,620 residents, so if a neighbour already uses us we can almost always put you on the same run.
Not unless you ask us to. A lot of Matua work is exactly this — a garden someone has built and maintained themselves for decades, which has simply become more than they want to be doing. Our job is to keep it as it is, to the standard you set. If we think something is genuinely failing we will mention it, but we are not going to arrive with opinions about your planting.
Weekly through December to February, fortnightly either side, monthly from June to August. Matua stays milder and greener than the exposed coastal suburbs because it is sheltered from the open ocean, so growth ticks along rather than shutting down — but winter genuinely eases, and we shift the schedule with the season rather than charging for visits the lawn has not earned.
