Taking a shrub down to ground level is quick and it looks finished on the day. Most established shrubs then grow back out of the root system you left in the ground, and a fair few come back denser than they were — because cutting is exactly what you do to thicken a hedge.
Actual removal means getting the root ball out. It takes longer, it leaves a hole, and it produces spoil that has to go on the trailer with everything else. It is also the only version that gives you the space back for something else.
