Stump grinding in New Zealand

Most stump grinding in New Zealand starts from around $100 + GST, with very large or difficult stumps going beyond that. As a rough guide: under 30cm across starts from $100 + GST, 30 to 60cm starts from $200 + GST, and 60cm and up starts from $400 + GST, upward depending on timber and access. Minimum call-out charges are standard across the industry because travel and set-up cost the same regardless of stump size — which is exactly why doing several in one visit is so much better value.

Standard is roughly 150 to 300mm below ground level, which is plenty for lawn or a garden bed — you can mow straight over it and never know it was there. If you’re paving, building or planting a new tree, we go deeper. Tell us the plan at quote time so the depth is right the first time.

No, and that’s deliberate. Grinding takes out the stump and the root flare; the deeper lateral roots stay in the ground and break down naturally over the following years. Digging them all out means excavation, a large hole to backfill, torn-up lawn, and a risk of destabilising neighbouring trees whose roots are tangled in. For lawn, garden or landscaping, leaving them is both cheaper and better.

Not if it’s ground properly. Suckering happens when a stump is taken down too shallow and live wood is left near the surface. Grinding below grade and taking out the root flare removes the growth points, and that’s the end of it. A few species will throw the odd sucker from a remaining root, which is easily dealt with.

Not straight away, and ideally not in the exact same spot. Fresh wood chips mixed deep into soil temporarily tie up nitrogen as they break down, which makes life hard for a young plant. Allow a few months before sowing grass or planting shrubs, and considerably longer before a new tree. If you’re set on replanting there, we’ll grind deeper and you’ll want the chip-heavy material taken out and replaced with topsoil. Planting a metre or two away is much easier.

Your call. By default they go back into the hole and get levelled off, which is included in the price. They make good surface mulch for beds once they’ve aged a little, so plenty of people spread the surplus. If you’d rather they left the property entirely, we’ll cart them off — just mention it when you’re getting the quote so it’s priced in.

This is the one thing we need your help with. A grinder works exactly where irrigation lines, garden lighting cable and shallow conduit tend to run, and there’s no way to see them from the surface. Before we start we’ll walk the area with you and ask what’s been put in over the years. If anything is uncertain we’ll work around it rather than risk it.

Most single stumps are done in thirty minutes to two hours, so it’s usually a same-day, in-and-out job. You don’t need to be home as long as we can access the stump and you’ve told us about any underground services beforehand. We’d just ask that pets and kids stay well clear of the machine while it’s running.

Generally not, if the tree was legitimately removed in the first place. The exception is where the tree was protected under the district plan or on a notable tree register — in that case it’s worth checking with Tauranga City Council before anything happens. We’ll flag it if something looks like it might fall into that category.
