Three things that decide a stump grinding job
Not one of the three can be judged from what you can see above ground.
Clearing a spot so nobody trips over it needs the stump taken flush. Laying turf or putting a bed in over it needs considerably more taken out, or the remaining root plate fights whatever you plant. Tell us what the space is for and the depth gets set to that rather than to a default.
Plenty of the newer ridge sections have a side run a full-size grinder will never get down, and a slope on the approach adds its own question. Almost nobody needs the entire root system out, and digging for it costs a great deal more.
A grinder works straight down through the stump itself. Your lawn either side of it is untouched, nothing gets dug across, and whatever is buried under the garden stays where it is. The hole it leaves is the width of the stump, not the width of a digger.
Digging one out is a different trade. It means breaking open the ground all around the stump, disturbing whatever is planted near it, and taking a real risk on an older section where what is buried is not always where the drawings put it.
There is one real reason to dig instead, and it is worth knowing which side of it you are on. A street name is not enough to price a stump, and pretending otherwise just means revising the number later. How thick it is, whether a machine can get to it, and what is living alongside it are all things somebody has to actually see.
