Our machine wants about a metre of clear width. A great many side gates are built at roughly 900mm, which looks perfectly generous from the kitchen window and is still a hundred millimetres short. Nobody finds that out by eye.
It is the most common reason a ride-on job dies in the driveway, and a tape measure prevents every instance of it. Thirty seconds at your end, and neither of us loses a morning to a machine that cannot get past the bins.
Tight is not the same as impossible. A gate panel that lifts out costs very little and pays for itself over a season of visits. Where there is genuinely no way through, or the ground is too steep to mow safely on a machine, we price the job as walk-behind work at walk-behind rates up front — rather than arriving, looking at the gate, and handing you a different number in your own driveway.
So before you book anybody, put a tape across the opening itself rather than the gate leaf, and send us that number along with whether the ground has any real fall on it. Those two figures are most of the quote.

We will quote you the smaller machine when it is the right one. A walk-behind invoices less than a ride-on, and we will still recommend it where the gate is tight or the ground is steep.
