A ride-on is arithmetic, not a luxury. Past about a quarter acre it gets cheaper per square metre the bigger the lawn gets — and under that, it’s the wrong tool and we’ll say so.

It comes down to one number, and most people are on the wrong side of it.
A ride-on can’t get near fences, beds or tight corners, so on a small section you end up hand-trimming most of it anyway — you’re paying for a machine that did the easy half. A walk-behind gives a better finish and costs less. Most sections we quote fall here, and we’ll tell you so.
On a large lawn the cost is hours, not square metres. A wider deck covers the same ground in a fraction of the passes, so the price per square metre drops — and keeps dropping the bigger the section gets. This is the point where a ride-on stops being a preference and starts being cheaper.
A ride-on on a genuinely steep ridge-top section is a safety question before it’s a cost one — beyond a certain gradient we won’t take one up it. We’ll walk the section with you and say honestly whether it’s ride-on ground or a job for a walk-behind on a slower, safer pass.

A standard ride-on needs roughly a metre of clear width to get through. Plenty of side gates sit around 900mm — near enough to look fine from the house, not near enough for the machine.
It is the single most common reason a ride-on booking falls over on arrival, and it is entirely avoidable with a tape measure. Two minutes now saves a wasted morning for both of us.
If it’s tight, there are options. A gate panel that lifts out is a cheap fix and pays for itself in the first season. Where there’s genuinely no way through, or the section is too steep to mow safely on a ride-on, we price the job as walk-behind work at walk-behind rates rather than turning up and discovering it.
So measure the gap between the posts before you book anyone — not the gate, the gap — and tell us the number, and whether the section has any real slope, when you enquire.

Clippings usually go back in. On a ride-on visit they’re mulched, which suits the volcanic loam here well on an established lawn. If the grass has got long enough that mulching would leave rows sitting on top to yellow, we catch and remove instead — and that disposal is already in your price.
A rolling, ridge-top suburb isn’t ride-on country everywhere — and we’d rather tell you now than on the day.
Bethlehem’s terrain runs from genuinely rolling ridge-top ground on the Heights, Views and Balmedie Ridge subdivisions to flatter, older ground down toward the Wairoa River. A ride-on needs open, reasonably level ground to turn safely, and a fair share of what’s gone up on the ridges since the mid-2000s simply doesn’t offer that.
If your section is on a slope, tell us before you book. We’ll say honestly whether it’s ride-on ground, and if it isn’t, a careful walk-behind pass at walk-behind rates is the right call rather than a machine that shouldn’t be up there.

We’d rather quote you the safer machine. If a walk-behind is the right and safer tool for your section we’ll say so, even though a ride-on visit invoices for more. A job that fails on arrival, or one taken up a slope it shouldn’t be on, costs everyone more than an honest answer on the phone.
Large lawns get away faster than small ones, and here the mild climate barely gives growth a break.

Mixed — the flatter, river-adjacent ground toward the Wairoa River suits a wide deck well, while the rolling ridge-top subdivisions often don’t, either on slope or gate width. Tell us your section and we’ll say honestly which machine suits it.
Not if it’s done properly. We change direction every visit, which is what stops wheel marks becoming permanent ruts. On sloped ground we’re also careful about timing after a wet spell, since volcanic loam can get slippery underfoot on an incline.
