Density Weeds need a gap

Weed seed needs bare soil and light to germinate. A thick lawn gives it neither. That’s why feeding does more long-term work than spraying — you can kill what’s there today, but if the lawn stays thin something else fills the space by spring. Most weed problems are really density problems wearing a disguise.

Timing Feed into active growth

Fertiliser applied to a growing lawn gets taken up and used. The same product on a dormant or heat-stressed lawn largely sits there. That’s why we work to the season rather than a fixed calendar — and why summer applications stay light, because a stressed lawn burns easily.

Why phosphate fixation changes the programme

This is the single most useful thing to understand about feeding a lawn on Bethlehem’s ground.

Katikati volcanic-ash loam is well-drained and holds moisture reasonably well, but it has a well-documented tendency to bind phosphate — a nutrient grass roots need for establishment and density — making a portion of any standard application effectively unavailable to the lawn.

A single heavy feed on this soil behaves less predictably than on a phosphate-neutral soil: some of what goes down greens the lawn briefly, but a meaningful share gets locked up in the soil chemistry before the roots ever reach it.

Splitting the same total quantity across four to six lighter, more frequent applications gives roots more chances to take up phosphate before it binds — and lets us use a blend formulated for exactly this soil type rather than a generic one.

That’s the whole case for a programme rather than a one-off here, and it’s a genuinely different reason to the “thin topsoil” story on a fresh subdivision — this is about the soil chemistry itself.

Kikuyu is sensitive to selective weedkillers, and Yates specifically advise against using their Weed ’n’ Feed hose-on or Turfix on kikuyu lawns because of burn risk. Both sit on the shelf next to everything else with no warning on the front. The granular format is the safer option — and if you’re not certain what grass you have, that’s a fair reason to let someone else handle the chemistry.

What Bethlehem’s ground does to a feeding programme

The one local material fact, and it comes down to how the soil itself behaves rather than how old it is.

Bethlehem’s Katikati volcanic-ash loam behaves consistently across both the rolling ridge subdivisions and the flatter river-flat ground — it’s the same soil type throughout. What changes is drainage and establishment: newer lawns on freshly graded ridge-top sections and older, settled lawns nearer the Wairoa River need different handling of the same underlying chemistry.

Worth being honest about this one: if your lawn is thin because it’s compacted or full of thatch, feeding will not fix it and we’ll tell you so. Feed goes onto a lawn that can use it. On a thatchy lawn the dethatching comes first — and then the feeding is genuinely worth doing.

01Why does my lawn go pale even though I feed it?

06Is the soil here different to the coast?

Yes — Bethlehem sits on volcanic-ash loam rather than the sand dune ground at Mount Maunganui or Pāpāmoa. It drains well but binds phosphate, which matters more for feeding than for mowing height, and a ridge-top section adds a runoff question flatter ground doesn’t have.

07Is it worth feeding a thin, spongy lawn?

Not yet. If it feels springy underfoot there’s a thatch layer between the grass and the soil, and feed applied on top of that mostly sits there. Dethatch first, then feed.

08Does it matter if my section is on a slope?

Yes, more than you’d think. A ridge-top lawn loses more of an application to surface runoff before it’s taken up, so lighter and more frequent feeds matter more there than on flat, river-adjacent ground.
