A ride-on is arithmetic, not a luxury. Past about a quarter acre it gets cheaper per square metre the bigger the lawn gets — and under that, it’s the wrong tool and we’ll say so.

It comes down to one number, and most people are on the wrong side of it.
A ride-on can’t get near fences, beds or tight corners, so on a small section you end up hand-trimming most of it anyway — you’re paying for a machine that did the easy half. A walk-behind gives a better finish and costs less. Most sections we quote fall here, and we’ll tell you so.
On a large lawn the cost is hours, not square metres. A wider deck covers the same ground in a fraction of the passes, so the price per square metre drops — and keeps dropping the bigger the section gets. This is the point where a ride-on stops being a preference and starts being cheaper.
Two different jobs at very different prices. Mowing keeps an area looking like lawn. Topping knocks a paddock down so it doesn’t go to seed and become a fire and pest problem. Trying to mow a whole block to lawn standard is expensive and usually pointless — we draw that line with you first.

A standard ride-on needs roughly a metre of clear width to get through. Plenty of side gates sit around 900mm — near enough to look fine from the house, not near enough for the machine.
It is the single most common reason a ride-on booking falls over on arrival, and it is entirely avoidable with a tape measure. Two minutes now saves a wasted morning for both of us.
If it’s tight, there are options. A gate panel that lifts out is a cheap fix and pays for itself in the first season. Where there’s genuinely no way through, we price the job as walk-behind work at walk-behind rates rather than turning up and discovering it.
So measure the gap between the posts before you book anyone — not the gate, the gap — and tell us the number when you enquire.

Clippings usually go back in. On a ride-on visit they’re mulched, which suits the volcanic ash soil here well on an established lawn. If the grass has got long enough that mulching would leave rows sitting on top to yellow, we catch and remove instead — and that disposal is already in your price.
This isn’t ride-on country either, on most of it — and we’d rather tell you now than on the day.
Ōmokoroa’s fastest growth has come from subdividing what used to be orchard blocks into standard residential sections, which means most new builds here sit on compact, fenced sections not far off Mount Maunganui’s own. A ride-on needs room to turn, and a lot of what’s gone up since 2018 simply doesn’t have it.

We’d rather quote you the cheaper machine. If a walk-behind is the right tool for your section we’ll say so, even though a ride-on visit invoices for more. Turning up with the wrong gear wastes your morning and ours, and a job that fails on arrival costs everyone more than an honest answer on the phone.
Large lawns get away faster than small ones, and here the mild climate barely gives growth a break.
Growth here barely closes down over winter. A big section left from June to September comes back needing a rescue, not a routine mow.

Topping knocks a paddock or rough area down so it doesn’t go to seed and become a fire and pest problem — different gear, different frequency, much lower cost. On a big block we usually mow the house lawn properly and top the rest, and we agree exactly where that line sits before quoting.
Not if it’s done properly. We change direction every visit, which is what stops wheel marks becoming permanent ruts. The volcanic ash soil here firms up reasonably well after rain too, though we’re a little more careful about timing after a genuinely wet spell than we would be on the sand dune coast.
Yes, but not with the ride-on. Anything the machine can’t reach is hand-trimmed on the same visit and that’s included rather than extra. It’s also why a section with a lot of obstacles takes longer than its area suggests.
