Tree & Hedge Trimming Matua

Tree & Hedge Trimming in Matua

A hedge holds its shape because it’s cut before it loses it — leave it two seasons instead of one and you’re not trimming anymore, you’re rebuilding. Matua’s established sections carry a lot of mature hedging and boundary trees that have had decades to get tall, wide, or both. We trim to keep shape and access, not just to make a mess smaller.

How overgrown is it, honestly?

A rough height and how long since the last trim helps us scope it properly.

Three things decide how a trim is priced

Height matters, but it’s not the only factor.

Height and reach Ladder work versus ground level

Anything past reach from the ground needs ladder or pole equipment, and that changes both time and safety requirements.

Time since last trim Maintenance versus recovery

A hedge cut every season is a quick shape-up. One left two or three years is a much bigger job to bring back under control.

Waste volume Where the time really goes

A well-maintained hedge produces a light trim. An overgrown one can produce several trailer loads that all need clearing.

Why a hedge left two seasons costs more than double

It’s not twice the growth. It’s a different job entirely.

Trimmed each seasonQuick shape-up
Left 2+ seasonsRecovery cut, much heavier waste

A hedge trimmed on a regular cycle only ever grows back to roughly the same shape, so each visit is mostly removing the same season’s growth.

Skip a season or two and the hedge doesn’t just get taller — it gets wider, denser, and loses the internal structure that held its shape. Bringing it back means cutting further into old wood, which some species tolerate better than others.

Waste volume scales faster than height does. An overgrown hedge doesn’t produce twice the clippings of a maintained one, it can easily produce four or five times as much, and that’s most of where the extra cost comes from.

Getting back onto a regular schedule after a recovery cut is usually the cheapest long-term option, even though the first visit costs more.

A hedge on a schedule is cheaper every single visit. The cost of skipping a season shows up all at once, later.

What a trim visit includes

Shape assessed first, then cut to hold that shape.

Inland established section or harbour frontage — it changes the shaping

Matua runs from sheltered inland streets to wind-exposed frontage along Beach Road.

Matua’s inland streets shelter mature hedging and boundary trees that have grown tall and dense over decades without much wind resistance. Closer to Beach Road and the saltmarsh, hedges and trees face regular wind and salt air off Tauranga Harbour, which naturally shapes growth but also stresses exposed foliage.

Inland established section

  • Taller, denser hedge growth
  • More shade-side dieback to manage
  • Boundary trees often need a crown lift
  • Regular shape holds well between trims

Harbour-frontage section

  • Wind naturally shapes exposed hedges
  • Salt burn on foliage facing the harbour
  • Lower, denser growth habit near the coast
  • Shelter planting may need protective shaping

We shape with the wind, not against it. A harbour-facing hedge trimmed to an inland-style square profile just gets battered back into a wind shape within a season anyway.

Some trees are protected under council rules — check before major work on a large or notable tree, or ask us and we’ll flag anything that looks protected.

We check height and access before quoting a firm price. A hedge photo from the ground can hide how much reach or waste is really involved.

Trimming demand through the year

Most hedge species are best cut outside their main flush of growth.

Peak trim seasonShoulder seasonQuiet season

Trimming just before or after the main growth flush holds shape longest. Cutting mid-flush means the hedge is back out of shape within weeks — harbour-side hedges especially, since wind exposure pushes uneven regrowth fast.

Our front hedge hadn’t been touched properly in about three years and had gotten genuinely wide. They warned us the first cut would look a bit hard before it recovers, and it did exactly that — six months on it’s holding a proper shape again and it’s a quick trim each time now.

What people ask us

Mostly about the job rather than about us, which is how it should be.

01Will a hard cut kill my hedge?

Most common hedge species handle a recovery cut fine, though a few are more sensitive — we’ll flag it before cutting if yours is one.

02How often should hedges be trimmed?

Twice a year suits most established hedges, though fast growers may need three.

03Do you remove all the clippings?

Yes, all waste is raked, loaded and removed the same day as the trim.

04Is GST included in the quote?

Yes, every price we give includes GST.

05I’m right on the harbour — does that change anything?

Yes. Wind and salt exposure change how a hedge or tree grows, so we often shape harbour-facing planting differently than an equivalent inland one.

06Do you trim trees as well as hedges?

Yes, including crown lifts and general shaping for boundary and feature trees.

07Do I need council permission for tree work?

Most routine trimming doesn’t need permission, but protected trees do — check with council if you’re unsure, or ask us and we’ll flag anything that looks protected.

08Can you handle a hedge near power lines?

We’ll assess access and safety on site — some situations need a specialist line-clearance contractor instead.

We’ll have a look, give you a fixed number, and then you can stop thinking about it.
