Sections are larger here, so the numbers run a little higher than the coast — but they hold, because the work is scoped before it starts.

Prices vary noticeably between suburbs here, which is why each has its own page: a tight Ōtūmoetai section with no vehicle access prices quite differently to an open Pyes Pā one at the same lawn area.
Seven suburbs, and the ground under them varies more than the twenty minutes between them suggests.
Tauranga is not one growing environment, it is several. Twenty minutes across the city and what is under your grass changes completely — and so does what your lawn needs. Ōtūmoetai and Matua sit on harbour-edge ground with sixty-year-old trees on small sections. Bethlehem’s low ground is heavy river flat that stays soft into spring. Pyes Pā and Tauriko are compacted new-build fill. Welcome Bay and Ōhauiti are sloped and sheltered. One flat regional approach gets at least half of them wrong.
The grass itself is kikuyu almost everywhere. Tough, drought-tolerant and it handles salt and wear better than anything else, which is why it dominates here. The trade is that it grows hard through summer, runs into garden beds given any encouragement, and builds a thatch layer faster than most lawns. Two rules cover most of it: never take more than a third of the leaf off in one cut, and dethatch once a year in autumn.
Access decides more of your price than lawn size does. On the older Ōtūmoetai and Matua sections there is often no way to get a trailer past the house, so every load is barrowed out to the street. On a mow that is minor; on a hedge reduction producing several cubic metres it is a significant part of the labour. Newer areas like Pyes Pā and Tauriko have wide drives and easy access, and price accordingly.
The gardens across the inner suburbs are mature, and that changes the work. A lot of what we do in Tauranga is not mowing at all — it is bringing an overgrown boundary back off a footpath, lifting branches off a roofline, or reducing a hedge that has taken the view. Species decides whether that is even possible: pittosporum and photinia come back from a hard cut, griselinia and buxus recover slowly, and conifers never recover at all. We identify before we quote, not after we cut.

Grass grows here from roughly September through to May, and on the coast never fully stops. Your schedule moves with it automatically, at no change to your rate.
The most valuable months across the city. Growth has eased so cuts hold their shape, wounds heal before hard weather, and deciduous trees drop enough leaf that you can finally see the structure. If you book one big job a year in Tauranga, book it here.
The alluvial river flats hold water through winter, and a heavy machine will mark a lawn that would carry it fine in February. We switch to lighter gear or shift the visit rather than leaving ruts. Up in the Heights it drains faster and this is much less of an issue.
Lawn growth, weed germination and hedge regrowth all start together, and on a larger section that adds up fast. This is when a property that was fine in August suddenly looks neglected, and when the schedule steps up from monthly to fortnightly.
The heavier inland soils around Bethlehem and Welcome Bay hold moisture far better than coastal sand, so those lawns stay green well into a dry spell. Ōtūmoetai and Matua, closer to the harbour edge, dry out sooner. Same city, two watering conversations.
We have used them at two properties now, one in Ōtūmoetai and one out at Pyes Pā. Completely different jobs and they priced each on what it actually was, rather than giving me one number for both. Same crew turns up either way.

Ōtūmoetai, Matua, Bethlehem, Welcome Bay, Ōhauiti, Pyes Pā and Tauriko across the city, plus Pāpāmoa, Mount Maunganui and Te Puke on the coast and Ōmokoroa, Te Puna and Te Puke in the Western Bay. A compact section starts from around $45 + GST a visit and a standard family section starts from around $55 + GST, with larger ride-on work starting from about $90 + GST. What moves it is how much of the section is actually lawn, whether we can get gear straight off the drive or everything goes through a side gate, how much edging there is, and slope. On a standard section we can usually price it from a couple of photos without visiting.
Because the jobs genuinely differ. A 1960s Ōtūmoetai section with no vehicle access means every load is barrowed to the street, which takes real time. A newer Pyes Pā section with a wide drive does not. Welcome Bay banks need walk-behind gear rather than a ride-on. We would rather price your actual property than round everyone up to cover the hard ones.
Weekly through December to February, fortnightly either side, and three to four weekly over winter on the coast. Up on the higher inland ground — Pyes Pā, Tauriko, parts of Ōhauiti — light frosts mean growth genuinely slows and monthly holds through winter. Your schedule shifts with the season automatically and your per-visit rate does not change.
It depends entirely on the species, which is why we identify it before quoting rather than after cutting. Pittosporum, photinia and camellia re-shoot readily from bare wood and can be taken well back. Griselinia and buxus recover but slowly, so those are better staged over two or three trims. Conifers — leylandii, macrocarpa, cryptomeria — will not regrow from brown wood at all, and cutting past the green shell leaves a permanent hole.
No. As long as we can get to the lawn we will do it and you will come home to a tidy section. Just tell us about locked gates, dogs, or anything you would rather we left alone. We send a photo after each visit, which is why this works well for rentals and for owners who are out of town.
No. There is no minimum term and no cancellation fee on residential work. You can pause, reschedule or stop with reasonable notice — a text is enough. Commercial grounds run as annual programmes because that is how seasons and budgets work, but there is a straightforward exit there too.
