Both are why we quote tree work after seeing it rather than over the phone. Mowing, by contrast, is straightforward — and cheaper here than most of Tauranga because the sections are small.

The trees have outgrown the sections they sit on. These houses went up through the 1960s and 70s, and whatever was planted then is now full size on a section that was never sized for it. Reduction work here is real tree work — roof clearance, weight off overextended limbs, opening a canopy that has closed over a whole back yard. Topping a mature tree is the one thing worth refusing: it comes back weaker and more likely to fail.
Everything is close enough to be somebody else’s problem too. At this density a tree is rarely just yours — branches over a fence, roots under a shared drive, a hedge shading next door. What we bring to those is a written scope so both households can see exactly what is being cut before anyone starts a saw. It is what keeps them neighbourly.
You usually cannot get a trailer in. Sixties sections with single driveways, carports and no side access mean every branch is carried or barrowed out to the street. On a mow that is minor. On a big reduction producing several cubic metres it is a significant part of the labour, so it goes in the quote rather than turning up on the day.

Where grass has genuinely stopped competing, mulch looks intentional and saves you replacing failed turf every year.

Sheltered and harbour-facing, so it runs mild. The calendar here is set by tree work, not by grass.
By far the most important window on the peninsula. Deciduous trees drop their leaves so the structure is visible and we can see what actually needs taking off. Growth has slowed, cuts heal before winter, and disease spreads far less than in warm wet weather. If you have one big job to book at Ōtūmoetai, book it now.
A suburb of mature trees on small sections produces a serious volume of leaf litter, and it lands on everyone’s lawn rather than just the owner’s. Left sitting on wet grass through winter it kills patches outright. Clearing through April and May is not cosmetic — it is what stops the lawn coming out of winter with bare spots.
Growth eases and the run empties out, which makes late winter the easiest time to get a big reduction or a stump job scheduled properly rather than squeezed between mows. It is also the right time for dormant pruning on anything deciduous.
The upside of a mature canopy: Ōtūmoetai lawns stay green through dry spells that brown off the coast, because they are shaded and sheltered. The downside is that heavily shaded grass thins out over time. Where it has stopped competing, mulch or shade planting beats trying to grow lawn there.

Generally yes, back to the boundary line but not past it — and the cuttings technically still belong to your neighbour, so offering them back is the right move. In practice a quiet word first solves almost everything, and we will write up exactly what is being cut so both households can see it beforehand. No — topping a mature tree is the one thing worth avoiding. It responds with a mass of weak, fast regrowth attached to a large cut wound, so within a few years you have a tree that is the same size again but structurally worse and more likely to fail. A proper reduction takes weight off selectively and keeps the tree balanced. It costs more once and far less over twenty years.

Weekly through December to February, fortnightly either side, monthly from June to August. Sections here are small so mowing is quick and priced accordingly. Worth adding an autumn leaf clear to that — leaf litter sitting on wet grass over winter is what causes most of the bare patches people find in spring.
