Ride-On Mowing Ōhauiti

Ride-On Mowing in Ōhauiti

A ride-on only earns its keep once the open mowing area is genuinely large — and whether the deck can actually get through the gate matters just as much as how big the lawn looks from the road. Ōhauiti has both ends of that scale, from tidy, well-established sections near the shops to bigger, sometimes sloped sections on the newer hillside streets. We’ll tell you honestly which mower suits yours.

  • Right machine for the section
  • Gate width checked before we book
  • Same rate, no surprise add-ons
  • No lock-in, GST included

Three things decide whether a ride-on makes sense

It’s rarely about section size alone.

Gate width The real deciding factor

A ride-on needs close to a metre of clear width to get through. Some access gaps are simply narrower than the lawn behind them suggests.

Mown area Where the time actually pays off

A compact, well-established lawn is usually quicker on foot. The savings only show up once the open mowing area is genuinely large.

Ground and slope Terraces, banks, obstacles

A sloped or terraced section changes whether a ride-on is actually the safer, faster option, whatever the total area comes to.

Why the gate decides more than the lawn does

Not the lawn size. The width of your gate.

Under 1,000mmWalk-behind instead
1,000mm+ clearanceJob’s on

A ride-on needs roughly a metre of clear width to get through cleanly. Plenty of side gates and driveway gaps were never measured against that number — they were built for people, not machines.

It’s the single most common reason a ride-on booking doesn’t go to plan on the day, and it’s entirely avoidable with a tape measure before we turn up.

If it’s tight, there are usually options. A removable gate panel is a cheap fix that pays for itself over a season. Where there’s genuinely no way through, we quote the job at walk-behind rates instead of discovering it on site.

Measure the gap between the posts, not the gate itself, and give us that number when you enquire.

Measure the gap, not the gate. It’s the difference between a booking and a wasted trip.

A ride-on doesn’t replace edge work. We still walk the garden borders and fence lines on foot afterward — that part of the job is identical whichever machine did the open ground.

Established property or new-build section — it changes the mowing plan

Ōhauiti runs from a settled, flatter core to sections still being built out on the hill.

An established Ōhauiti property near Ohauiti Road usually has a defined, level lawn shape and a gate that’s been the same width for years — easy to assess once. A section on the newer hillside subdivisions toward Oropi is a different job: the lawn can be bigger but on a real grade, sometimes terraced, and a ride-on isn’t always the safer choice once the slope gets past a certain point.

Established property

  • Defined, settled lawn area
  • Mature garden borders to work around
  • Gate and driveway width already fixed
  • Straightforward to book a ride-on against

New-build section

  • Larger open lawn, but often sloped
  • Terracing can split the mowing area up
  • Steep grade sometimes rules a ride-on out
  • Walk-behind or hand mower on the steepest ground

We assess the actual grade, not just the address. A big hillside section and a smaller flat one a street apart can need entirely different machines.

What it costs

We recommend the machine, not just book what you asked for. If a walk-behind is genuinely safer or cheaper for your section, we’ll say so upfront.

Mowing demand through the year

Ride-on visits follow the same growth curve as mowing generally, just at scale.

Winter still needs a visit, just a shorter one. Growth slows here rather than stopping, and larger open sections often keep growing later into autumn than tighter, shaded lawns do.

We’re on one of the bigger hillside sections and the lawn was a real size before the garden even went in. They checked the gate and the slope honestly before booking the ride-on and told us where it could and couldn’t go — no wasted morning, no guesswork.

What people ask us

Mostly about the job rather than about us, which is how it should be.

01How do I know if I need a ride-on?

If your open mowing area is genuinely large, it’s usually worth it. We’ll assess your section honestly rather than upsell the bigger machine.

02What if my gate’s too narrow?

We quote the job at walk-behind rates instead. A lot of gates sit right on the edge of fitting, so we always check first.

03Do you mow around sprinkler heads and garden edges?

Yes — we walk the lawn before starting and the ride-on gives edges and beds a wide berth.

04Is GST included in the quote?

Yes, every price we give includes GST.

05I’m on a sloped hillside section — does that rule out a ride-on?

Not always, but past a certain grade it’s safer on foot. We’ll check the slope on site before booking either way.

06Can I switch between ride-on and walk-behind?

Yes, we’ll use whichever suits the visit — some properties get a mix depending on ground conditions.

07Do you take the grass clippings away?

Green waste is included in every visit, so nothing’s left behind.

08Can I pause or stop the service anytime?

Yes, there’s no lock-in contract — pause, skip, or cancel whenever you need.

Give us a bell, or send the form

We’ll have a look, give you a fixed number, and then you can stop thinking about it.
