A border packed with mature shrubs and perennials hides three times the weeding of an open bed the same size, because every pull is done kneeling and reaching rather than standing. Density, not bed area, is what sets the hours.
Garden Maintenance in Ōhauiti
We keep garden beds in order across Ōhauiti — the deep mature borders on the older sections off Ōhauiti Road, the young beds still filling in on the hillside terraces, the awkward sloping strips that came with half the newer subdivisions. Weeding, edging and pruning on a cycle set to how fast your beds actually grow, not to a standard interval off a price list.
- Weeded, edged and pruned every visit
- Cycle set to your beds, not a price list
- Clippings and weeds leave with us
- Police-vetted crew on your section

Three things decide how an Ōhauiti garden gets maintained
Two gardens on the same street can want completely different visits.
Agapanthus, hedging shrubs and anything that spreads by runner want cutting back on a cycle. Slower structural planting mostly wants leaving alone. A garden that is half the first kind needs its interval set by that half, not by the average.
A bed kept on a fortnight never needs rescuing. A bed visited twice a year gets a clearance each time, at clearance prices, and spends the months in between looking like it needs one. The work is the same work either way — what changes is how much of it you pay for.
Why fortnightly garden maintenance beats an annual rescue
They look like the same service. They are not the same bill.
A clearance visit shows a lot of progress in one afternoon, and that is exactly why people book them. What it hides is that the same weeds, pulled small in September, would have come out in a fraction of the time — and would not have seeded the bed for next year on their way out.
Regular visits catch everything while it is still small. An edge that takes five minutes in October takes half an hour in January, and the half hour is on your invoice.
The denser the garden, the more the interval matters. A mature border has several things getting away at once, so two extra weeks costs more there than it ever would on a sparse new bed.
That is not an argument against a one-off. Where a garden has already gone, a clearance is exactly where to begin — it simply opens a schedule rather than standing in for one.
What an Ōhauiti garden maintenance visit includes
Five tasks every time, with the time inside them shifting as the season does.
All five happen every visit — which of them takes the hour is decided by the month and by what has come away since we were last here.
Your green bin is not part of our disposal plan. Everything cut or pulled goes onto the trailer and off the property, which on a fortnightly cycle through spring is more volume than a council bin would take anyway.
Established Ōhauiti garden or new-build — different work entirely
This suburb runs from a settled flatter core to terraces still being finished on the hill.
An established garden off Ōhauiti Road has usually had fifteen or twenty years to fill in, and the work in it is volume: a lot of weeding, done kneeling, and structural pruning once or twice a year. A garden on a hillside terrace finished last year is the reverse — little to weed, but young planting that will or will not establish depending on what happens in its first two summers.
Established property
- Deep beds that have had years to close over
- Most of the visit is weeding, and most of it on your knees
- One or two structural prunes a year, timed to the plant
- A routine that barely changes once it is set
New-build section
- Young beds with bare soil still showing between plants
- Little to weed, but the watering needs eyes on it
- Roots still working into ground that was a building site
- Mulch and a cut edge do more here than pruning does
The visit gets built around your beds, not around a checklist. On a mature border most of the hour goes into weeding; on a year-old terrace garden most of it goes into mulch, edges and keeping an eye on what is struggling. Same price band, completely different afternoon.

QuotedOvergrown garden, first clearance Getting a neglected garden back under control
Expect the first visit on a neglected garden to cost more than any that follow it. That is a clearance, not maintenance, and it is quoted separately so you can see which is which. Everything after it should be noticeably cheaper, and if it is not, something has gone wrong with the interval.
The Ōhauiti garden year, month by month
What a bed asks of you changes more across twelve months than most people allow for.
If you only tighten the cycle for one part of the year, make it October through December. Everything comes away at once after winter and a bed that was fine in September is a different bed by late November. Plenty of our Ōhauiti customers run fortnightly through that stretch and monthly either side, which is cheaper over a year than a flat fortnightly and far cheaper than catching it late.
If a garden does not need us every fortnight, we say so and quote monthly, even though the fortnightly round is the better invoice. A customer paying for visits a bed does not want works it out inside a season and cancels the lot, and we would rather hold a monthly job for five years than a fortnightly one for five months. The interval is set off what is growing, not off what we would prefer to bill.
Ōhauiti garden maintenance questions
The eight we answer standing in somebody’s beds, most weeks of the year.
01How often should an Ōhauiti garden be maintained?
Fortnightly suits most established beds here and monthly is enough for sparser or younger ones, but the honest version is that it depends on what you have planted. A border carrying agapanthus and fast hedging wants the fortnight. A bed of slow structural planting will sit happily on four weeks. You get told which of those you own, and where the longer interval does the job that is what gets quoted.
02Can I get a one-off garden tidy-up in Ōhauiti rather than a schedule?
Yes, and for a garden that has already got away it is the sensible place to start — a clearance first, priced as a clearance, then a schedule from there if you want one. What a one-off will not do is hold. Come back in four months and you are booking the same clearance again at the same price, which is the arithmetic the whole of this page is about.
03Is green waste removal included in Ōhauiti garden maintenance?
Yes, in the quoted figure, every visit. Weeds, prunings and clippings are loaded and gone, with no tip charge following behind. Through a busy spring the volume off a decent border exceeds what a council bin would take, so this is practicality rather than generosity.
04How much does garden maintenance cost in Ōhauiti?
From $65 a visit. Where you land above that comes down to how much bed there is, how densely it is planted, how often we come, and whether the section is flat or one of the hillside terraces with steps in it. A first clearance on a neglected garden is priced on its own line, so the catch-up and the ongoing rate never arrive as one number.
05What does a newly planted Ōhauiti hillside garden need in its first year?
Watching more than cutting. Light weeding while there is still bare soil between plants, mulch kept topped up, the border edge cut in, and eyes on the watering — because the roots are still pushing out into soil that was under a digger not long ago. Structural pruning is a conversation for year three, not year one.
06Does Ōhauiti garden maintenance cover hedge and tree trimming?
Light shaping inside a bed, yes, as part of the visit. A boundary hedge that needs taking down properly, or anything requiring a ladder, is the separate trimming service — partly because it is a different job and partly because the species decides what a hedge can survive, and that deserves more than a few minutes at the end of a garden visit.
07What happens if an Ōhauiti garden is badly overgrown?
It is priced as a clearance rather than as maintenance, and the two figures are kept apart on the quote so nobody confuses them. That first visit will be the dearest one you have from us. Everything after it should drop away noticeably, and if it does not, the interval is wrong and we should be talking about that rather than invoicing you for it.
08Can Ōhauiti garden visits be paused over winter?
Yes, and August and September are genuinely the two quietest months in a bed here, so it is a reasonable thing to ask. What catches people is restarting in November rather than October — by then six weeks of spring growth is waiting and the first visit back is a half-clearance. Dropping to monthly over winter usually works out better than stopping altogether.
Other Ōhauiti jobs for the same visit
Added to a scheduled garden visit, each of these costs less than booking it on its own.
