It comes down to one number, and most people are on the wrong side of it.
A ride-on can’t get near fences, beds or tight corners, so on a small section you end up hand-trimming most of it anyway — you’re paying for a machine that did the easy half. A walk-behind gives a better finish and costs less. Most standard sections on Pyes Pā’s newer subdivisions fall here, and we’ll tell you so.
On a large lawn the cost is hours, not square metres. A wider deck covers the same ground in a fraction of the passes, so the price per square metre drops — and keeps dropping the bigger the section gets. This is the point where a ride-on stops being a preference and starts being cheaper, which is exactly the case on many of Pyes Pā’s lifestyle blocks along the rural fringe.
A ride-on on genuinely steep ground is a safety question before it’s a cost one — beyond a certain gradient we won’t take one up it, and rolling hill-country ground makes that come up more often here than on flatter suburbs. We’ll walk the section with you and say honestly whether it’s ride-on ground or a job for a walk-behind on a slower, safer pass.

A standard ride-on needs roughly a metre of clear width to get through. Plenty of side gates sit around 900mm — near enough to look fine from the house, not near enough for the machine.
It is the single most common reason a ride-on booking falls over on arrival, and it is entirely avoidable with a tape measure. Two minutes now saves a wasted morning for both of us.
If it’s tight, there are options. A gate panel that lifts out is a cheap fix and pays for itself in the first season. Where there’s genuinely no way through, or the section is too steep to mow safely on a ride-on, we price the job as walk-behind work at walk-behind rates rather than turning up and discovering it.
So measure the gap between the posts before you book anyone — not the gate, the gap — and tell us the number, and whether the section has any real slope, when you enquire.

Clippings usually go back in. On a ride-on visit they’re mulched, which suits an established lawn well. If the grass has got long enough that mulching would leave rows sitting on top to yellow, we catch and remove instead — and that disposal is already in your price.

Pyes Pā has grown faster than any other suburb we cover — up 124.6% since 2013, 38.3% since 2018. Most of that sits in master-planned new subdivisions like The Lakes, built out on former kiwifruit orchard and pastoral land, while a working orchard and lifestyle-block fringe still runs along the rural edge. Which side of that your section sits on changes whether a ride-on is even the right machine.

We’d rather quote you the safer machine. If a walk-behind is the right and safer tool for your section we’ll say so, even though a ride-on visit invoices for more. A job that fails on arrival, or one taken up a slope it shouldn’t be on, costs everyone more than an honest answer on the phone.
Large lawns get away faster than small ones, and Tauranga’s mild climate barely gives growth a break.
Growth here barely closes down over winter. A big section left from June to September comes back needing a rescue, not a routine mow.
Rang about a ride-on for our block on the edge of the orchard land and got told straight up the section still had a fair bit of slope to it — walk-behind on that part, ride-on on the flatter ground. Not what I expected from a bloke selling mowing. Been using them ever since.
