Stump Grinding Matua

Stump Grinding in Matua

The tree came down two summers ago and the stump is still sitting there, throwing suckers up through the lawn every spring and going soft in the middle. On the older Matua streets — Clarke Street, Kulim Avenue, the sections backing onto Fergusson Park — that stump is usually a metre off a fence or a path, and that is the measurement that decides which machine can reach it. Grinding chews it out below the root flare so the ground takes topsoil and turf instead of everything being planned around it.

What sets the price of a stump grinding job in Matua

Width across the cut gets you in the ballpark. The other two decide the rest.

Width across the cut Where the figure starts

Grinding time climbs faster than the width does — doubling the diameter does not double the job, it roughly quadruples the face the teeth have to work across, and it leaves that much more mulch behind.

The flare, not the trunk What the ground is hiding

Plenty of trees sit on a buttress far wider underground than the trunk suggests. Each of those shoulders has to come out as well, or the first spade into that spot next spring finds timber.

How close the machine can get Gates, paths, buried services

A grinder wants to swing across the stump from more than one side. Boxed in against a fence or a concrete path it works at an angle instead, which takes longer, and anything buried within reach has to be located before the teeth drop.

Grinding a stump out versus digging it out

Both get rid of it. Only one of them leaves you with a lawn to repair.

Excavate and liftA metre-wide crater to backfill
Grind from the top downA shallow dish of mulch, ready to level

Lifting a stump means digging a trench right round the root ball first, because nothing comes out until the anchor roots are cut. On a tree that has been in the ground forty years that trench is a metre across and a metre down, and the machine that digs it has to get there and turn around. You end up repairing far more lawn than the stump ever occupied.

Grinding never exposes the roots. The wheel works down through the stump and across the buttress from above, turning both into mulch under the grass line, and the only ground touched is the ground the stump was standing on.

What you are left with is a shallow dish, not a crater. Rake the mulch back in, cap it with topsoil, and the spot takes seed or turf in the same week — no spoil heap to get rid of and no subsidence to come back to.

The deep structural roots stay put either way. They are already decaying from the day the canopy comes off, they hold no growth point, and lawn or shallow planting goes in over the top of them without noticing they are there.

One method leaves a dish to level. The other leaves a pit to make good. That is the whole reason almost nobody digs them out any more.

Five steps, and the first one has nothing to do with the stump.

Nothing spins until the services are located. An unclear site stops the job rather than becoming a risk you end up carrying.

The mulch is worth something, so say before the day whether you want it. Ground stump makes a decent mulch for established beds and it is already on site, which is cheaper than buying bark. If you would rather it was gone, it goes on the trailer with everything else.

Where in Matua the stump is standing changes the grinding job

Inland of Levers Road the problem is room. Out towards the harbour it is the ground itself.

On the built-out inland streets the stump is rarely in open lawn. It is behind a fence, beside a concrete path, or inside a bed that has grown around it for twenty years — so the question is which machine fits through the gate and how much of the stump it can reach from each side. Out past Beach Road towards the saltmarsh there is usually room to work, though the ground is sandier and holds less, which changes how the machine sits and how the dish settles once it is filled.

Inland of Levers Road

  • Gate width decides the machine before anything else
  • Services run closer: irrigation, power to a sleepout
  • Forty-year buttress, wider underground than the trunk
  • Often reachable from only one or two sides

Towards Beach Road and the saltmarsh

  • Enough room to attack it from all four sides
  • Sandier ground, so the dish wants topsoil not just chip
  • Exposed timber often brittle and quicker to cut
  • Wind-thrown trees, so the root plate can be lifted already

Access gets measured before the machine is chosen, not after it turns up. Send the gate width and a photo of where the stump sits, and the grinder that arrives is the one that fits — rather than the one that has to work at an angle because it was the only machine on the trailer.

You will know things no plan shows — the cable somebody ran out to the shed, the irrigation line laid before the path went down. Tell us about those when you send the address and they get avoided rather than found.

What stump grinding costs in Matua

No figure on this one. What follows is where your stump sits on the scale, and what shifts it.

  • One stump, narrow across the cut Open lawn, machine can get right round it
    Simplest job
  • One stump, wide across the cut More face to work across, more mulch to deal with
    Costs more
  • Several stumps, one visit The travel and setup is already paid for by the first one
    Cheaper each
  • Boxed in, or bigger than a wheelbarrow Reachable from one side only, or a machine change to get through the gate

There is no starting figure for this one, and that is deliberate rather than evasive. Two stumps the same width across the cut can be an hour apart in the work — one standing in open lawn, the other wedged between a fence and a path with a cable somewhere underneath. A number given over the phone on the width alone would be a guess, and a guess only ever gets corrected upwards. So somebody looks, measures, and gives you the figure on the day.

When Matua books stump grinding

The one job on this site that barely cares what month it is.

JanFebMarAprMayJun JulAugSepOctNovDec
Frequency key
Busier monthsSteady all year

Nothing about a stump changes with the calendar, so the bookings do not either. The work follows tree felling rather than the weather, which is why there is no dead month in it. The lift through May and June is deciduous trees coming down once the leaves are off, and the one in October and November is people clearing a spot before they lay new lawn for summer.

If the services cannot be established with any confidence, the stump does not get ground that day and you are not charged for the visit. Hitting a cable costs more than the whole job is worth and the liability for it lands on us, so there is nothing noble about the rule — it is simply the cheaper way for everyone to be wrong.

Stump grinding in Matua: the questions that come first

Eight of them, in the order they usually get asked.

01How deep does the stump get ground?

At least 250mm under the grass line as a rule, and deeper if turf is going straight over it. That is the depth where you can cap the dish with topsoil and sow or lay without the roots interfering, and it is agreed on the day rather than assumed.

02Can it grow back after grinding?

No. Everything that could push a new shoot sits in the stump and the collar above the roots, and that is exactly what the wheel takes out. Suckers already up elsewhere on the lawn run out of what was feeding them and give up over the following season.

03What stops you hitting a cable or a pipe?

Everything buried within reach of the wheel gets located before the machine is even positioned, and anything you know about on your own property goes on the list too. Where it cannot be established with confidence, the job is stood down rather than risked.

04What does stump grinding cost in Matua?

There is no figure on this page because this is the one job we price standing next to it. Width across the cut, how far the buttress runs underground, and what the machine can actually get at swing the work too far for a phone estimate to mean anything. Somebody measures, hands you the number, and the invoice repeats it.

05I’m down near the saltmarsh — does that change the job?

Usually in your favour. There is more room to get the machine right round the stump down there, and exposed timber tends to be brittle and cuts faster. The one thing to allow for is that sandy ground settles, so the dish wants topsoil through it rather than chip alone.

06What is left on the lawn when you finish?

A shallow dish of mulch where the stump was, raked level, with the surrounding grass and paths cleared of thrown chip. From there you can cap it and sow, or we level it with topsoil as part of the visit — whichever you have decided before the day.

07Is it cheaper to do several stumps at once?

Yes, and the reason is simple: getting the machine to your place and set up is most of the cost of a small grind, and it only gets paid for once. If there are three stumps on the section, say so when you send the address rather than booking them one at a time.

08Do I have to take the mulch?

No, but think about it before you turn it down. Chip off a ground stump works perfectly well under shrubs and round trees, and there is a trailer-load of it sitting on your lawn already rather than at a yard you have to pay. Say no and it goes out with us.
