Five hundred people lived here in 1996. Fifteen thousand do now. Nearly every lawn in Pyes Pā was farmland within living memory, and that history is still sitting under the turf.

The spread here is wider than any other suburb we quote, because the sections genuinely are five times different in size.
Per visit, green waste included. Prices exclude GST, with GST added at the standard rate on the invoice. Because Pyes Pā and The Lakes are dense and we run them as one round, booking alongside a neighbour brings both prices down — worth mentioning if someone on your street already uses us. New lawn installs are quoted separately after seeing the ground, since how much cultivation is needed is the whole cost.
Almost everything here is new, and almost every problem traces back to what is under the turf.
The second summer is when it shows. A new lawn here nearly always looks great in year one, because fresh turf on fresh topsoil always does. Year two is the test. This ground was farmland, then a construction site with machinery over it for a year, then given a skim of topsoil. If that was never broken up, the roots have nowhere to go and the lawn thins out the first time it gets properly dry. Watering more does not help, because the water cannot get down either.
Section sizes vary five-fold under one suburb name. The Lakes alone was built with sections from about 200m² to 1,000m², and Upper Pyes Pā runs to genuine lifestyle blocks. We always ask before quoting, because bringing a ride-on for a courtyard, or a push mower for half an acre, wastes everyone’s morning.
You are high enough here to get frost. Genuinely different to the coast. Light frosts mean kikuyu browns off over winter where it stays green at the beach, spring growth starts a couple of weeks later, and cutting short going into a cold snap does real damage. We lift the height through May rather than taking it down for winter.
Half the gardens are still being made. A lot of what we do here is first-time work — turning a bare section into a lawn, getting beds edged and mulched, establishing a hedge that will actually screen something in five years. Getting the foundations right now saves redoing it later, and a screening hedge shaped from year one thickens at the base instead of running up leggy.

Cooler and later than the coast. Elevation shifts the whole calendar back by a couple of weeks at both ends.
The single most important thing on an elevated section: do not cut it short heading into frost. A longer leaf protects the crown, and grass that goes into winter scalped comes out of it thin and patchy. Autumn is also the right window for dethatching and any groundwork on a struggling new-build lawn — soil is still warm enough to recover.
Unlike the beach suburbs, growth here really does stop. Kikuyu browns off with the frosts and monthly is plenty. Nobody should be paying for fortnightly visits in July up here. It is also our quietest run, which makes winter the cheapest time to book a new lawn or a bigger landscaping job.
Pyes Pā wakes up a couple of weeks behind Pāpāmoa. That gap is genuinely useful — it is the last quiet window before everything fires, and the best time to get a new lawn in so it establishes before summer rather than fighting through it.
Heat and dry weather find out whether a lawn was laid over prepared ground or just rolled onto builder’s topsoil. If a section is going to thin out, this is when. Lifting the mowing height and feeding lightly gets most through it — but if it happens two summers running, the ground needs fixing rather than the grass.
Our lawn looked great the first year and fell apart the second. They dug it up, broke the hard layer underneath and relaid it properly. Three summers on it has not missed a beat.
What people here ask us most.
Almost always compaction. Pyes Pā sections were farmland, then building sites with machinery over them, then given a thin layer of topsoil before turf went down. Roots stay in that top layer and the first properly dry spell finds them out. Watering more does not fix it, because the water cannot get down either. The ground needs breaking up, which usually means lifting the turf, cultivating to depth and relaying — a one-off job that ends the problem permanently.
Ground first, always. Cultivate to depth so the compacted layer is broken up, bring in screened topsoil where the builder was light, level it properly, then a starter feed, then turf or seed. Doing it in that order costs more on day one and less over ten years. We quote new lawns after seeing the section, because how much cultivation is needed is essentially the whole cost.

Both. The Lakes is one of our densest rounds — it was built from 2003 on 254 hectares of former farmland with sections from about 200m² up to 1,000m², so we are through there constantly. Upper Pyes Pā toward Cheyne Road, SH29 and the TECT park is lifestyle country and needs different gear, so mention it when you enquire.
For a 200 to 300m² courtyard the mowing itself takes minutes — what you are really paying for is turning up. That is why booking alongside a neighbour makes such a difference here: The Lakes is dense enough that we are often on your street anyway, and two jobs on one stop is cheaper for both of you. Always worth asking.
Autumn or early spring, and start trimming it far earlier than feels right. The mistake on new sections is letting a young hedge run up to full height first — it goes leggy and never thickens at the base. Light trimming from the first year forces density low down, which is what actually screens a neighbour. On this elevated ground, avoid planting right before a frosty spell.
Weekly through December to February, fortnightly either side, and monthly from May through August. That winter window is genuinely longer than on the coast because growth here actually stops rather than just slowing. We shift the schedule with the season automatically, so you are not paying for cuts the lawn has not earned.
