A ride-on needs close to a metre of clear width to get through. On older Matua properties that gap is often narrower than it looks from the front door.
Matua’s sections tend to be established and full — mature trees, garden borders, driveways that weren’t laid out with a ride-on in mind. Whether the deck actually fits is usually a gate question, not a lawn-size one, and it’s worth answering before anyone books a machine. We’ll tell you honestly which mower actually suits your section.
A rough size and your gate width helps us book the right machine first time.
It’s rarely about section size alone.
A ride-on needs close to a metre of clear width to get through. On older Matua properties that gap is often narrower than it looks from the front door.
A compact, well-established lawn is usually quicker on foot. The savings only show up once the open mowing area is genuinely large.
Mature gardens mean more edges to work around, and that changes whether a ride-on is actually the faster option.
Not the lawn size. The width of your gate.
A ride-on needs roughly a metre of clear width to get through cleanly. On a lot of established Matua properties, side gates and driveway gaps were never measured against that number — they were built for people, not machines.
It’s the single most common reason a ride-on booking doesn’t go to plan on the day, and it’s entirely avoidable with a tape measure before we turn up.
If it’s tight, there are usually options. A removable gate panel is a cheap fix that pays for itself over a season. Where there’s genuinely no way through, we quote the job at walk-behind rates instead of discovering it on site.
Measure the gap between the posts, not the gate itself, and give us that number when you enquire.
Bigger machine, same care around the edges.
Same process every visit — the ride-on covers open ground faster, the trimming still happens by hand.
A ride-on doesn’t replace edge work. We still walk the garden borders and fence lines on foot afterward — that part of the job is identical whichever machine did the open ground.
Matua runs from tight inland streets to open ground along Beach Road.
Matua’s established inland streets are mostly built-out and shaded by decades of tree growth, which tends to mean smaller, broken-up lawn areas better suited to a walk-behind. Closer to Beach Road and the saltmarsh, sections open out and catch more wind and salt air off the harbour, which changes both grass growth and what a ride-on can access.
We check the section, not just the address. Two Matua properties on the same street can need entirely different machines depending on tree cover and access.
Fixed once we’ve looked. Green waste and GST are both already in it.
We recommend the machine, not just book what you asked for. If a walk-behind is genuinely quicker and cheaper for your lawn, we’ll say so upfront.
Ride-on visits follow the same growth curve as mowing generally, just at scale.
Winter still needs a visit, just a shorter one. Growth slows here rather than stopping, and harbour-side lawns catching salt-laden wind off Tauranga Harbour often keep growing later into autumn than inland lawns do.
We’re set back from Beach Road with a decent stretch of open lawn and a gate nobody had ever measured. They came out, checked it properly, and told us it’d fit before booking the ride-on — no wasted morning, no guesswork.
Mostly about the job rather than about us, which is how it should be.
If your open mowing area is genuinely large, it’s usually worth it. We’ll assess your section honestly rather than upsell the bigger machine.
We quote the job at walk-behind rates instead. A lot of Matua gates sit right on the edge of fitting, so we always check first.
Yes — we walk the lawn before starting and the ride-on gives edges and beds a wide berth.
Yes, every price we give includes GST.
It can. Open, harbour-facing lawns often suit a ride-on well, but wind and salt air affect how the grass grows and how often it needs cutting.
Yes, we’ll use whichever suits the visit — some properties get a mix depending on ground conditions.
Green waste is included in every visit, so nothing’s left behind.
Yes, there’s no lock-in contract — pause, skip, or cancel whenever you need.
Most people add one or two of these, since we’re already on the property.
