The machine does the open ground. Everything that makes a block look finished happens around the edges afterwards.
Fence lines and trees by hand
No ride-on gets tight to a post, a trunk or a water trough. Those are finished with a line trimmer, which is where the tidy look actually comes from.
Drives and paths blown clear
A ride-on throws clippings a long way. The drive, paths and anywhere near the house get cleared before we go.
Slopes mowed where it is safe
Ride-ons roll. Anything past a safe gradient gets handled differently, and you hear about it before the first visit rather than after.
Gates, stock and troughs respected
Shut behind us, stock left undisturbed, nothing driven over that should not be. It matters more on a working block than people expect.

Why block owners contract the mowing out
Plenty of block owners buy a ride-on, use it for two seasons and then stop. It is not the mowing that wears thin, it is the servicing, the blade sharpening and losing a weekend day to it every fortnight through summer.

What Bay of Plenty blocks ask of a ride-on
Blocks around this region are not all the same job. Four things that change how one gets mowed.
Vigorous grass over a big area
The creeping grass types that thrive here put on real bulk across an acre. Left a fortnight too long in summer it needs two passes rather than one.
Flat coast, contoured inland
Open sandy blocks at Papamoa mow fast and even. The rolling clay country around Te Puna and Omokoroa has banks and wet patches that set the pace instead.
Growth swings hard here
Labour Weekend to April the grass runs hard. After that it all but stops. A single year-round interval either falls behind in December or charges for nothing in July.
Wet ground will not take a machine
After heavy rain a ride-on cuts ruts into soft paddock that stay there all season. Sometimes the right call is to come back in a few days.

How much does ride-on mowing cost in the Bay of Plenty?
It starts at $65 a visit. Where your block lands depends on the area of grass, how rough or steep the ground is, how often we come back and whether the gate is wide enough for a full-size deck.
How big does a section need to be before a ride-on makes sense?
Roughly half an acre is where it starts paying. Below that a walk-behind is usually quicker once you count getting the machine off the trailer and through the gate.
Do you do the edges and around the trees?
Yes, by hand once the machine work is done. A machine that size cannot reach a fence post or a trunk, and leaving those untouched is what makes a block still look rough after mowing.
Can you mow banks and slopes?
Up to a point. Ride-ons roll, and past a certain gradient no amount of care makes it safe. We will tell you which parts of your block fall outside that rather than attempting them.
What if the grass has got really long?
It comes down over more than one pass. Dropping very long grass to finished height in a single cut smothers what is underneath with clippings and leaves yellow stalk showing.
Will the mower damage my paddock when it is wet?
It can, which is why we sometimes ask to come back. Ruts cut into soft ground after heavy rain stay there for the season, and that is a worse outcome than grass being a few days long.
Do you take the clippings away?
On a regular round they mulch back in, which suits a block. After a long gap there can be enough that it would smother the grass, so that gets raked off or collected instead.
Is it cheaper to just buy my own ride-on?
Over enough years, maybe. People usually underestimate the servicing, blade sharpening, shed space and the fortnightly half-day through summer. Plenty of our customers own one and still call us.
Can you work around stock?
Yes. Tell us which paddocks have animals in them and we work around or wait. Gates get shut behind us, which on a working block matters more than anything else we do.
